Simultaneous PET/MRI in Head & Neck Cancers

MRI is the imaging modality of choice for delineating head and neck cancers. Combining PET with MRI may prove to be an excellent modality to evaluate head and neck cancers, especially in recurrent settings where the normal anatomical plains have been deformed due to surgery/radiotherapy.

Case Study:

Follow up Case of Operated Ca Left Buccal Mucosa

Case History:

44 years old male, with Ca left buccal mucosa. Post left cheek commando with left RND. Post RT/CT. PET MRI was done as a follow-up investigation.

Axial STIR image (left) and PET MR fused image (right) reveals a nodular thickening in along the anterior margin of the flap with increased FDG uptake suggesting possible recurrence. HPE: recurrent SCC. The note is also made of FDG uptake along the right medial pterygoid muscle which does not show any lesion on corresponding MR image and is physiological. Simultaneous PET MRI allows better appreciation due to high soft tissue contrast with MR and accurate co-registration of PET uptake.

Case Study Prepared by:

This short PET-MRI Scan case was compiled by Dr. Sangeeta Taneja and Dr. Amarnath Jena (Nuclear Medicine Physician at PET-Suite @ Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Sarita Vihar).
